Innography Introduces First Automated Intellectual Property Title Assurance Platform

PatentGuard™ identifies patent title issues, corrective measures and improves analysis accuracy by 50 percent

AUSTIN, Texas – August 15, 2011 – To address the growing concerns around the complexity and cost of verifying patent title ownership, Innography, the intellectual property business intelligence company, today announced it is simplifying the patent title validation process with the release of PatentGuard, the world's first automated Intellectual Property Title Assurance platform.

PatentGuard is an automated service that analyzes a patent portfolio to identify potential patent title issues, initiates repairs to broken title chains, where possible, and can be used to provide an ongoing, cost-effective monitoring service to mitigate patent title risks. Following an initial scan, PatentGuard provides portfolio managers with a certified audit report of existing and on-going issues, as well as recommending corrective actions to resolve them, assuring the asset is properly protected. Analysis with PatentGuard proves to be up to 50 percent more accurate than commonly used methods, such as manual analysis.

"We have found that 10 – 40 percent of a typical patent portfolio has title issues," said Tyron Stading, founder and CTO at Innography. "PatentGuard is specifically designed to combat those issues by tackling the tedious, manual procedures required to analyze a patent portfolio for chain of title issues. We’re now able to save our clients time and money by providing them with a level of IP protection that has been unavailable until today."

Over the past ten years, patents have become important financial assets for progressive organizations who are not only looking to leverage patent licensing to grow revenue, but are also buying patents as a defensive strategy. A patent provides the right to sue potential infringers and protect product and market innovations, and only a valid patent owner can enforce that right. Activities such as bankruptcy, mergers & acquisitions, licensing, partnerships, or even fraud or theft can cause ownership complications. A simple break in the chain of title can result in the loss of all rights to a patent, rendering it useless in court.

"With the purchase of PatentGuard, we are applying best practices to managing our intellectual property by significantly reducing title issues that could affect future sales, litigation and licensing revenues," said Aaron Waxler, manager of Licensing & Claims at NXP. "PatentGuard is faster, more accurate, and far more cost effective than alternative methods of intellectual property title clearance."

The PatentGuard Solution

  • Initial Audit – PatentGuard will perform an initial evaluation utilizing proprietary algorithms to find breaks in the chain of ownership within an existing patent portfolio.
  • Issue Reporting – PatentGuard delivers a comprehensive report that can also be used to provide evidence to auditors of Patent Record Controls and ensure compliance for existing and future regulations.
  • Optional Issue Correction – Once a discrepancy is found and validated, PatentGuard can "lock down" that asset and immediately correct the ownership records according to Patent Office rules and regulations, if possible.
  • Ongoing Monitoring Service – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, PatentGuard can also monitor patent assets in order to provide early warning of new title issues as they arise.
  • No Human Resources Required – PatentGuard is a turnkey solution that enables monitoring and protection of patents without additional human resources.
  • Cost Savings – Through advanced software analysis, PatentGuard is 5-10x cheaper than any existing people intensive practices.

On August 23 at 1:00pm CDT, Innography will host a 30-minute webinar to provide attendees with an overview of PatentGuard. Click here to register.
