Trust Your Luck… or Use Semantic Search

I met with a General Counsel at a conference and he described a situation where he found a recently-issued patent of interest, owned by a partner, that proved very helpful in a negotiation. In fact, it made all the difference.

The problem was that the patent didn’t include the normal keywords.  The GC said “I was just lucky to find it, and I don’t want to rely on luck.”

We searched in Innography using keyword search and sure enough, the patent didn’t come up.  So I said, “Well, let’s see if Innography’s semantic search finds it.” I clicked “Find More Like This” on one of their patents that included the keyword, and the hidden patent was #6 on the result list!

So you can rely on luck… or you can rely on Innography’s semantic search to find relevant patents that keywords won’t.
